What Is MSPSDHH?

Michigan School Professionals for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (MSPSDHH) is an organization for professionals in the field of Deaf education.  Members discuss and collaborate to address issues related to educational programming, early services, current special education law and various other topics related to the education of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Who Belongs to MSPSDHH?

  • School personnel from intermediate school districts, regional service agencies, local school districts, and Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD)
  • DHH Program supervisors or their designees
  • Representatives from state agencies and organizations serving children who are DHH and their families
  • Professionals from auditory verbal, ASL/English bilingual, and total communication programs

What is the Purpose of MSPSDHH?

This organization was established in the 1970's, with a small group of program leaders meeting at the Michigan Department of Education.  Since that time, it has grown in both size and structure to include approximately 70 members from intermediate school districts, regional service agencies and/or local school districts in Michigan.  Meetings consist of professional development and learning, informal sharing and networking, and two business meetings per year. Professional development presentations may include instruction and practice on specific strategies, interventions, curricula, materials and service models used to promote better student outcomes.  In addition, members work collaboratively to design and share professional resources and best-practice documents.

MSPSDHH works collaboratively with the Michigan Department of Education-Low Incidence Outreach (MDE-LIO), Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI), Michigan Hands & Voices, Michigan Coalition for DHH, Michigan Council for Exceptional Children-Division of Communicative Disabilities and Deafness (CEC-DCDD), as well as other professional organizations and university programs.
